Reporter Stacy Vogel of The Janesville Gazette is yawning over the Jane Austen sequel industry.
Here's the thing: "Pride and Prejudice" is my favorite book for a reason. So why should I read these imitations (or reinterpretations, as they like to call them) when I have the real thing sitting on my shelf?Hmmm? It’s quite obvious to moi. Maybe she should research why her cities founding fathers chose to name their metropolis Janesville. They certainly understood that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.

I actually agree with Vogel, why ruin Pride and Prejudice by reading Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, or any of the other spin offs? The originals are so amazing I feel like these spinoffs are just tainting them.

I felt just like Vogel until three years ago when I picked up my first Pride & Prejudice sequel. Now I read practically every bit of Austen fan fiction I can get my hands on. I too could do without the Zombies, but good Austen fan fic acts as a form of commentary on the novels, enriching a readers appreciating of the original text. Does reading criticism lessen the value of literature work? Certainly not.
