I agree, Persuasion seems like a novel that men would be able to relate to more than any other of Austen's because you see all different kinds of men like Captain Wentworth and Admiral Croft to Captain Benwick and to awful Mr. Elliot. Even to women I'd recommend Persuasion for their first Jane Austen read.
I don't think I would never succeed in convincing my beloved husband to read any of Austen's novel! Anyhow as for men and reading Austen ...Last november, I read pages from Northanger Abbey, Sense and Sensibility and Pride and Prejudice to my last - year students (many of them are 19-year-old boys) and also showed them bits of the three latest film adaptations. Do you know what? They liked "Sense and Sensibility" the best and they were great fans of ... Colonel Brandon! So, my answer to the poll is ...Sense and Sensibility.
I just voted for Persuasion. My dad would probably have difficulty reading the book at first, but if he stuck with it he would not be able to put it down.
I found Persuasion the most accessable Austen novel.
However I fell in love with Bronte's, Jane Eyre, because I think her courage and the kindness that shines through in spite of her ordeals; most wonderful.
As a male Austen lover, I definitely say not S&S - it was my first, and I really struggled. Not until I finished P&P (after half of Emma and all of Persuasion) did I really hit my stride. Now, of course, I love them all. But P&P is most likely to entice return customers (even though it's not my favorite novel) - it's just the most accessible.
Oooooh fun post! I'd recommend Persuasion! There's a good canvas of men in the story and of course, they are mature, men who have been to sea and war.

ReplyDeleteNorthanger Abbey is pretty funny and sort of a mystery, I'm gonna go with that one. Jenni
ReplyDeleteSense and sensibility, or Northanger abbey.

Jane Eyre beats the Austen girls anytime.
