Penguin Classics has just released a new edition of Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen with a sparkling new cover by fashion illustrator Rueben Toledo.We have seen many traditional cover art designs for Pride and Prejudice over the years, but I must say that I think that Toledo’s new cover qualifies as the snazziest. The two most pressing questions are: 1.) Do you judge a book by its cover? and, 2.) Do you need yet another copy of P&P in your library? Penguin Books is hoping you do, and I wholly confess to answering yes to both questions. One can never have too many editions of P&P and this transformation of Lizzy, Darcy &C into “Couture Classics” is irresistible.

ReplyDeleteMy favorite scene has to be when Darcy shows up during Lizzie's visit to Pemberly. (I should add that it was my favorite before Colin Firth ever took his notorious dip.) When I first read the book, I was on tenterhooks about what they would do if they spotted each other there.
This cover is simply too delicious to resist!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite scene is Collins' proposal to Elizabeth. I have found that when read out loud, this scene is falling-out-of-your-chair hilarious. Poor Mr. Collins never realizes how insufferable he is---wonderful!
I always loved Lizzy's visit to Rosings and her interactions with Darcy and Col. Fitzwilliam. I love the fact that Fitzwilliam is charmed by Lizzy. You also see a different side to Darcy. His proposal to Lizzy is so manic and unsure and yet so desperate and passionate. This wall that he's built up starts to crumble.

I love this cover - very original! So many good scenes to chose from ...if I had to pick, I think it would be Mr. Darcy's proposal to Elizabeth at the Collins' parsonage. It was so unexpected when I first read the book eons ago and really was a turning point in the novel. I love Mr. Darcy's bad proposal and Elizabeth's ability to tell Mr. Darcy exactly how she feels about it!

ReplyDeleteElizabeth dazzles while confidently standing up to Lady Catherine. Both being so stubborn makes this encounter unforgettable! Being strong for the moment and saving her tears for later, go Lizzy!
It's been my favorite since I was 11 or 12, and I remember reading that scene to my older cousin, only to be met with an incredulous "what!?"
She doesn't have much of a head for Austen, but I may win her yet!

It is tough to pick a favorite.
ReplyDeleteMine is the verbal sparring that begins at Netherfield, when Miss Bingley is trying to engage Mr Darcy by talking about Georiana, and he says Georgiana is about 'Miss Elizabeth Bennet's height'.
That may be a strange favorite scene, but I love how it puts down Miss Bingley and at the same time acknowledges that he has noticed Elizabeth on physical level. I find it so 'charged' with the bginning-of-something feeling.

ReplyDeleteOne can never have enough copies of P&P floating around. :) I love Lizzy's inner dialogue while touring Pemberley--the of all this she could have been mistress bit. It's the realization of all that is Darcy and what a good guy he really is.
ReplyDeleteMy copy is old and needs to be replaced. Mr. Toledo's cover is very different and not one I'd imagine for this title. It is striking , I like it.
ReplyDeleteHard to choose a favorite scene. It is a toss-up between Darcy's proposal (you really had to feel a bit sorry for him) and Elizabeth's visit to Pemberly. It takes you from her misunderstanding of the man to a better realization of him and what she had lost (temporarily).

ReplyDeleteMy favorite scene is when Lizzie goes to Pemberley and is turning the pages for Darcy's sister as she plays the piano. And she looks up and Darcy and she stare at eachother, and Darcy realizes that maybe he still has a chance with her after all.

My favorite scene in P&P? You must be kidding...how am I supposed to narrow down all of them to just one? Okay, my favorite scene is where Lady C. rejoins Darcy in the carriage and tells him that he has smooth sailing ahead with Lizzy. No, what! That wasn't in the book, it was in the Olivier/Garson movie :)

My favorite scene is after Mr. Collins proposes and Mr. Bennett tells Lizzy that she if she marries him, he (Mr. Bennett) will never speak to her again.

ReplyDeleteI'd have to say my favorite of parts is the verbal sparring between Lizzy and Darcy when she's staying at Netherfield nursing Jane. I think they reveal a lot about each other during those moments. It always seems like they're already flirting to me, though it just annoys Elizabeth!
Definitely the scene where Elizabeth meets Darcy at Pemberley...gives me goosebumps every time! Love this new edition and would love to own it. One can never have too many copies of anything by Jane!

ReplyDeleteMy vote for favorite scene in P&P has to go to the first dancing scene, too -- the word "tolerable" comes to mind. :) I love the snobbery and Elizabeth's attempts at aloofness about the whole thing. Classic -- literally!

My favorite scene is the walk where they finally talk and discover that they both love each other. The two of them are the best in that scene - they are serious and also funny.

My favorite scene has to be when Darcy first proposes to Lizzie. There is so much passion and power flowing between them and the titled traits of pride and prejudice are revealed ever so cleverly through Austen's wit and language.
ReplyDeleteLove the cover! I would have to say that my favorite is when her father laughs at the fact that he's hearing that Darcy is after Elizabeth, and he expects Lizzy to join in the spectacle of finding all this bizzare as he does and she can barely muster a smile!

ReplyDeleteI've mentioned this before at my own blog, but it is easily my favourite novel of all time. From the opening line to the final chapter it is pure brilliance. So much wit! So much drama! So much romance! So much irony and sarcasm!
My favourite part of the story is when our heroine, Elizabeth Bennet, meets Mr Darcy completely by accident at his home, Pemberley, whilst there with her aunt and uncle, perusing the house and grounds (and thinking Mr Darcy is away at the time). It is here that is becomes apparent her opinion of him is not what it should be, and it is this moment that she falls in love.
I would consider it impossible for anyone not to enjoy this book.

My all time favorite scene is when Lizzy and Darcy run into each other at Pemberley. It is beautifully written by Austen and you can just feel the embarrassment that both of the characters are feeling yet trying to hide by civilities.
ReplyDeleteI love when Lizzie and Darcy encounter each other for the first time at Pemberley, during Lizzie's impromptu visit with her aunt and uncle. It's an awkward moment for the two of them, but it's also incredibly sweet. I love it!

My favorite scene is probably when Lizzy reveals the contents of Darcy's letter to Jane, and Jane scores a perfect 10 in mental gymnastics trying to make them both good. Displays perfectly the sweetness that makes Jane my favorite character, and the humor that makes Jane Austen so enjoyable.
ReplyDeleteI too love when Lizzy finally spills everything regarding Darcy & Wickham to Jane when she returns home from the Collins', but because of Lizzy's honesty with herself. She admits so beautifully to being wrong, accepts her prejudice and the wicked delight she had in it, and carries on. It changed me, this scene, helped me to accept my own shortcomings with (hopefully) more grace.

Pick a favorite scene? I couldn't if my life depended upon it! I would have to relate the whole book! Many of the comments preceding mine offer great ones. I tend to love the scenes where one or the other of L&D learn something about themselves, some of which have been described. So I will cite one where the reader gets to learn something new of Lizzy even though it's near the end of the book.
ReplyDeleteIt's when Lydia lets slip to Lizzy that Mr Darcy was at her wedding. Jane tells Lydia that if it is meant to be secret, she ought not to say anymore, which pretty much makes it impossible for Lizzy to question Lydia more, such that she has to remove herself from the room not to be tempted. But the first thing she does is write to her Aunt Gardiner for the particulars. And even then, she writes that if it is a confidence that can't be broken, she'll try to be satisfied with her ignorance. But then the book says, 'Not that I shall though,' she added to herself, and she finished the letter: 'and, my dear aunt, if you do not tell me in an honourable manner, I shall certainly be reduced to tricks and stratagems to find it out.'
I love this moment when we see Lizzy -- it's a lovely reminder not only of her openness (admitting she'll find out honorably or otherwise), her realization of how much Mr Darcy matters to her, her speculation as to why he might have been at the wedding (for her?) but also is a wonderful reminder for us as readers that Lizzy, as smart-open-sassy-etc as she is, is a young woman -- only 20 -- in love. Just a delightful moment of insight into this character.
Oh... and there are few true impossibilities in this world... but one of them is even the idea that anyone could ever have too many copies of P&P. (LOL)
Choosing only one favorite scene is tough--and I'll probably change my mind right after I hit publish--but I'm going to have to go with Elizabeth and Darcy's first meeting at the assembly. I love their sharp exchange, and it sets the stage so wonderfully for everything that's to come in the book.
ReplyDeleteThe new Penguin cover is quite spectacular. I'm currently without a copy of P&P because my Oxford Illustrated edition appears to have disappeared. (It's so annoying to lose one book in a set.)
Ooooooh, I'm due for a new copy of P&P! Like many others, my favorite scene is the first proposal. I always want to shout to Darcy to stop talking and he always continues on, suggesting that Lizzy just wanted to be flattered, and I think "oh no he didn't!" and she gives it to him. It's so perfect and really establishes how much they each have to overcome to make it to point they're at at the end of the book.

ReplyDeleteMy favorite scene has to be the confrontation between Lady Catherine and Elizabeth at Longbourne. You seen such intelligence and fire in Elizabeth in that exchange. I always imagined that is what Jane Austen was like.

ReplyDeleteI have so many favorite scenes, but the one that just makes me laugh so much everytime I read it over, is when Mr. Bennet tells Elizabeth that if she marries Mr. Colins she'd have to be a stranger to him... I can't read the Mr. Collins marriage proposal to Lizzy dialogue fast enough and not without a silly grin and giggle at it all! tiffscienski@gmail.com
One of my favorite scenes is at the end when Jane asks Lizzy when she first new she cared for Mr. Darcy and she says, "...when I first saw Pemberly."

ReplyDeleteI love the scene with Elizabeth and her father in the library after Darcy has asked for Mr. Bennet's consent to marry Elizabeth.
ReplyDeleteMr. Bennet's concern for Elizabeth's happiness in marriage is so touching and I always tear up when he says "...If this be the case, he deserves you. I could not have parted with you, my Lizzy, to any one less worthy."
Amidst all Mr. Bennet's witticisms and sarcasms, this is a beautiful heartfelt moment that shows how much he loves and cares about his daughter.
It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a woman in possession of a copy of _Pride and Prejudice_ can always use another copy of _Pride and Prejudice_.
