There's something about men in uniform that warms the cockles of my heart. While Jane Austen did not write about the battles raging in Europe, she did include regimental men and sailors in her novels. This week we ask you to consider the uniforms worn by two of her heroes and choose:
The hero in uniform I like best (Part 1)
Alan Rickman as Colonel Brandon in Sense and Sensibility, 1995
Ciaran Hinds as Captain Wentworth, Persuasion 1996
Please note: Next week you will be asked to choose for your favorite Mr. Wickham in uniform.
Wow, Just discovered this blog!
ReplyDeleteI could spend days here! May I ask how you plan to celebrate Jane's birthday this year?
Thank you for the compliment! We usually write a post about Jane and point people to sites of interest.
ReplyDeleteActually I like both Alan Rickman and CiarĂ¡n Hinds in their parts. So I can't decide, sorry ;)
ReplyDeleteO Captain! My Captain!
ReplyDeleteI love the character Col. Brandon and Alan R.'s depiction but must pick Ciaran H. in his impressive Capt. Wentworth uniform...he cuts a far more appealing military man in my eyes. I'm partial to Navy Men... I married one !
ReplyDeleteI can't believe more people are voting for Ciaran Hinds! I love Alan Rickman and his Colonel Brandon is by far my most favorite...so caring and attentive, but also strong.
ReplyDeleteCiaran Hinds as Cpt Wentworth leaves that old 35-year old codger in the dust with his flannel scarf.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad I'm not the only one having to make such a difficult decision! I like both actors in these roles and just adore that Alan Rickman, but I think Wentworth's dress is much more dashing.
ReplyDeleteIn this case, despite my great fandom of Alan Rickman, Mr. Hinds portrayal of Captain Wentworth wins.
ReplyDeleteHe's also playing Dumbledore's brother in the next two Harry Potter movies, btw.
Didn't your Mothers warn you about sailors!! But Wentworth is a cool dude I would sail with him anytime (smiles).
ReplyDeleteNigel,
ReplyDeletemy Mother did warn me about Sailors but in my husband's case, I got one who is in every way my own Capt. Wentworth...my Hubs is a wonderful man !
Col.Brandon is worthy of admiration but in this throwdown (shame on you Vic for giving us impossible choices!), I would have to go with Capt.Wentworth. Gosh, just look at that picture! Plus, when I see him, I immediately think of "You pierce my soul..."
ReplyDeleteHello Nona Beach,
ReplyDeleteYou must miss your Captain when he goes to sea?
Nigel,
ReplyDeleteI did miss him when he was at sea for many deployments but he is happily retired from the Navy...and am I glad of it !!! We both did our bit for King and country so to speak !
