Wuthering Heights Reviews

Gentle Readers, Our Wuthering Heights reviews are up. Vic reacted with a parody in which Dr. Phyl analyzes the characters in a post entitled Bats in Heathcliff's Belfry, and Laurel Ann simply attributed Heathcliff's and Cathy's bad actions in the film to Succumbing to a Case of Bad Parenting. What did you think? Visit the links and let us know. Also, PBS offers a blog for its specials: Remotely Connected. Read Vic's review here.

Good reviews !

I couldn't help throughout the whole thing thinking of Tom Hardy as a young clone of Captain Picard in the last Star Trek movie.

And his crooked teeth really bothered me too...

Tom Hardy portrays Heathcliff as the tortured soul he is - a bit sick and twisted.
Hardy, however, is hot hot hot.

Crooked teeth are quite common in all countries except the U.S. Hardy's teeth are very appropriate for the time and place of the film setting.
Lynn needs to travel a bit.

Appalled. I found Masterpiece Theatre, which brought us I, Claudius, Upstairs, Downstairs and even earlier versions of Jane Eyre, etc. is turning into Cliff Notes.

Cranford was wonderful but it felt like it could have stretched over six weeks, Bleak House was good too, but none recall the old days on PBS.

Tess had a surprisingly convincing lead surrounded by dulldom. Also too short.

Now this. Actors with the depth of paper plates, unabsorbing pacing of material--and the abomination of the image of the married lintons having graphic sex seared into my brain.

Friends, we've reached a new low.

I don't remember if it was insinuated that Heathcliff and Cathy had sex in the book. I don't think it did. I wish they wouldn't have done that to this version of Wuthering Heights.

Sorry I don't think Tom Hardy is Hot...just not my type, I guess. He is a good actor, in spite of his smile...

I've seen plenty of crooked and rotton teeth in my time, bad breath included.

Where I live, the quality of teeth even rivals Great Britain in some places for it's lack of good oral care. ( the deep south of the U.S.)

I just don't want to see a romantic lead ( even if he is wreaking havoc on everyone ) with teeth like that...

If you will remember, Colin Firth had pretty bad teeth in P & P but because of the role he played, they were smartly kept under wraps until the last possible moment ( after the wedding, as they were driving away, he smiles broadly and it isn't handsome at all ...after he became famous,he went right to a dentist and got them fixed and I for one am glad for it !

One does not have to travel to see bad teeth...they are everywhere !

Nigel, thanks for trying to defuse a female difference of opinion

Yes, that is a beautiful horse indeed !

I totlly agree with Maggie. We get it, they had sex. It was totally unnessesary, what if someone was watching that with their kids?

And I'm not really cool with the idea of heathcliff and cathy having sex. It just takes away from the type of love they had. And didn't they only kiss twice in the book instead of all the time like in the movie?
In the book,The first time Cathy said something like "kiss me again and I shall die" and the second time was on her death bed.

Whatever, Idk if they are going for ratings or what. Kind of low on the part of masterpice theater.

I never took WH as a love story. I always thought it was some narcisstic struggle between two entities (C&H) almost as if she coveted his male side and he her female side. Heathcliff was no prince like Rochester (he killed Isabella's dog fer God's sake). Also, both in the book and this recent filming, it struck me how H's most authentic feelings were directed at the men surrounding him. Real visceral feeling, despite it being venemous and hateful.

I applaud Peter Bowker and all others concerned regarding this adaptation-it was wonderful!
I have been waiting for this adaptation for years, a visual masterpiece that tells the story in all it's brutality and stark reality.
Tom Hardy-well, what can I say? His Heathcliff was sublime in my opinion, exactly how I imagined him to be: brooding, brutal, intense, twisted, obsessed, devastatingly handsome and a tortured soul. For me, he stood out; his persona as Heathcliff has still not left my mind and I find myself thinking about his character days later after watching it. I have since watched more of Tom Hardy's work and I have to say that he is a star in the making. He has a raw talent that comes along once in a while that makes the industry sit up, listen and watch. Check out his other works, especially Stuart, A Life Backwards (based on a true story), it will be forever ingrained in your soul.
