Oh, how I miss the A&E channel as it once was. Known as Arts and Entertainment, it introduced us to such shows as 1995s Pride and Prejudice and 1997s Jane Eyre. These days the network is known for Dog the Bounty Hunter, Intervention and Criss Angel Mindfreak. What a waste.
I had an opportunity to watch Jane Eyre recently, and had the pleasure of watching a few of my favorite English actors: Samantha Morton, Ciaran Hinds, Rupert Penry Jones, Elizabeth Garvie, and Gemma Jones. All have acted in a Jane Austen movie.
Samantha Morton as Jane Eyre |
Samantha as Harriet Smith (1996) |
Ciaran Hinds as Mr. Rochester |
Ciaran Hinds as Captain Wentworth (1995) |
Rupert Penry-Jones as St John Rivers |
Rupert as Captain Wentworth (2007) |
Elizabeth Garvie as Diana Rivers |
Elizabeth as Elizabeth Bennet (1980) |
Gemma Jones (center) as Mrs. Fairfax the housekeeper |
Gemma as Mrs. Dashwood (1996) |
Gemma (l) as Bridget Jones's mum (2001) |

You are so right. A&E is such a joke now, compared to what it used to be in the 1990s! *sadness*

Yes, A&E seems to have forgotten the "arts" part and has opted for cheap entertainment. Such a pity.
I agree! I used to LOVE the old A&E...so sad they changed their format--such a big mistake! Thank heavens for PBS & Mobil Masterpiece!
I love all these films--have them all. One of my favorite things is collecting all the versions of these films...love them!
Thanks for all you share!

Very well said !!!
I have seen all these films and series and yes, A & E has lost their way in the deep, dark forest of making money vs quality programs....reality shows are cheap to produce when compared to the kind of programs I enjoy watching and make tons of money !!!
I just watched Samantha Morton in Jane Eyre this weekend while home sick. A Jane Austen dvd is always soothing to watch when you are not feeling quite right.

Hmm, I don't think I like Hinds that much but he seems to get a lot of great roles. There is just something lacking in his acting or his appearance.
My Darcy Vibrates…
You're definitely my kinda lady...congrats and kisses.
I use to love A&E, watched it all the time growing up because of these miniseries and Biography especially. Now for the past 10 years, it's a joke of a channel.
