Pride and Prejudice Sequel Meme
Christina at Jackets & Covers blog is a Jane Austen fan on a mission. Her goal is to read every Pride and Prejudice sequel, retelling or variation ever written. That is one serious Pride and Prejudice fan. To date, she has read 11 novels on her list of 45 titles. That is quite an accomplishment Christina, but your list is not quite complete, so it may take you a bit longer than you expected!
I boast having read 15 on her list, and four that are missing totalling 19. You can check out her complete list here to see which ones you have read and what titles need to be added to her list.
Pride and Prejudice Sequel Challenge
So the challenge to readers today is to not only to root Christina on, but to call out the titles that are missing to update the list and in turn list all of the Pride and Prejudice sequels that you have read and give them a six word review. Here are a few examples from sequels that I have read.
Pemberley Shades (DA Bonivia-Hunt) - First sequel written still reigns today (add)
Letters from Pemberley (Jane Dawkins) - Class act still an accomplished story
Mr. Darcy's Diary (Maya Slater) - More Darcy than you ever guessed (add)
Mr. Darcy's Daughter (Rebecca Ann Collins) - Victorian Darcy's do historical fiction
Impulse & Initiative (Abigail Reynolds) - Darcy seduces Elizabeth before wedding (add)
Mrs. Darcy's Dilemma (Diana Birchall) - Closest witty resemblance to Austen's style
The Darcys & the Bingleys (Marsha Altman) - Funny fantasy with Karma Sutra
Join in to root Christina on and check back here as we track her progress!

I've read these --
ReplyDeleteAssembly Such as This, An {Pamela Aidan}
Duty and Desire {Pamela Aidan}
These Three Remain {Pamela Aidan}
and I loved those, even part two, which I know wasn't everyone's favorite. . .
and this one --
Mr. Darcy’s Diary {Amanda Grange}
Just love her diaries! Hope she keeps writing more after the last two come out! :)
and. . .
Seducing Mr Darcy {Gwyn Cready}
I'm not a fan of time travel/paranormal romances, but I did get it, because, well, that should be obvious. ;) It was lots of fun! :)
and I have this one, but haven't read it just yet --
Old Friends and New Fancies {Sybil G. Brinton}
and that I think is my paltry little old sequels collection. Well, P&P collection. If you add Amanda Grange's Mr Knightly's Diary and Captain Wentworth's Diary and Edmund Bertram's Diary, then that's my entire really paltry JA sequel collection. Gotta do something about that. :)

Thanks for rooting me on! I'm not sure how far I'll get, but I'm a girl on a mission.
ReplyDeleteNone!
ReplyDeletebecause there is only one.
I read Pemberley (Emma Tennant) a few years ago, and was so disappointed by the way Elizabeth and Darcy's marriage and relationship was dealt with, I've never picked up another sequel...I think this quest has just given me a new curiosity.
ReplyDeletevia here...good luck with your quest.
Here are two to add to the list: Mr. Darcy Presents His Bride by Helen Halstead
ReplyDeleteThe Dracy's Give a Ball by Elizabeth Newark
Oooops, that should read Darcy's not Dracy's!
ReplyDeleteWell I have read some of the sequels.
ReplyDeletewhat I think of them :
Emma Tennants books: Öurk!!!(very bad)
Darys story by Janet Aylmer:
it is readable but not more. I got annoyed with the fact that she repeated much of P& P and that she did not try to get into Darcys mind. I he seemed rather wet. I did not get that impression of him in P&P I see little explanation in her text for his feelings for Lizzy. We get to know that he is very attracted to her, but all is repeated rather calmly . He goes to London with Bingley thinks of Lizzy often. Goes to Rosings and suddenly decides he loves her and proposes. I mean where in the story is the struggle, passion, desire ... I mean in his proposal he talks about that he has struggled in vain and that his feelings will not be repressed and in his letter to her he speaks of the utmost force of his passion (for her) which have made him forget all considerations which even have made him warn his friend for marrying into her family. I get very little impressions of this feelings in the book, Darcy's Story. Not that I want the book to be wallowing in feelings like some soap operas, but....... At least in P&P2 you got the impression of his struggle and rather passionate feelings and Lizzy's emotional and physical impression on him. You get very little of it in Aylmer's book. I also missed things about his childhood and youth and what has made him sometimes rather cynical and critical of the world in general. His relations to his parents, Wickham, Colonel Fitzwilliam, women in general, his own social class and the life within it, etc.
Mr Darcy takes a wife/The Bar Sinister by Linda Berdoll:
Well if you want to know what Darcy and Elizabeth did between the sheets this is the book to read. It has around 460 pages and around 150 of them are sex scenes between Darcy and Elizabeth !!
Not that I have anything against sex scenes in a book about the Darcy marriage but this is a bit to much and it bacomes boring in the long run.I also do not think mr Darcy and Elizabeth would have made love in everyroom at Pemberly out in the woods and in a carriage !! I mr Darcy is supposed to a gentleman so I think they would keep to their bedroom most of the time ;) the book has some good parts but is a bit to full off sex murder and mayhem.
Pride and Prescience by Carrie Bebris.
this is a detective story were the newlywed Darcys solve a mystery. the relationship betwen elisabeth and Darcy is well done but the supernatural elements in the story are totally unussesary.
Lydia Bennets story by Jane Odiwe.
A PP story from Lydia Bennets perspective it also goes into her marriage with wickham. Nice story and good description about how Lydias trip to Brighton was and how she fell for Wickham and how she later matures and become dessilussioned with her marriage
Seducing mr Darcy by Gwyn Cready
Fun story about a modern woman who goes back in time and has an affair with Darcy and thus upsets PP and has to fix it again.Some sexscenes but rather fun as a whole

Anna Karin S, thank you for your insights and for taking the time to share them with us.
ReplyDeletethank you ;)
ReplyDeleteI could have written more but did not want to clogg up the comment field ;)
I would like to read more sequels but to buy them costs money and thery are not available in libraries here in sweden.
As a whole many sequels and fanfictions I have read are either a bit prim or priggish or goes to far in the other direction wallowing in angst,complications,sentimentality sex, murder and mayhem. totally forgetting jane austens humor and common sense.

I read Me and Mr. Darcy!
ReplyDeleteI have read many Pride and Prejudice sequels.
ReplyDeleteAmanda Grange's Darcys Diary, is a very good read. Its Pride and Prejudice but from Darcys point of view.
Colleen McCullough's The Independence of Miss Mary Bennet is also very good. It tells the story of Mary (Elizabeth Bennet's younger sister) many years after the events in Pride and Prejudice; It also shows what married life is like for Lizzie and Darcy, Jae and Bingley, Lydia and Wickham. Very interesting and a very enjpyable read for all fans!
I have also read, Mr Darcy, Vampyre by Amanda Grange and Pride and Prejudice and Zombies by Seth Grahame Smith.
Both are also very good reads.
Mr Darcy, Vampyre tells the story of after Lizzie Bennet's marriage to Darcy and how everything changes. Darcy is eventually revealled as a vampire.
Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, is a good adaption of the classic. It tells the story of Pride and Prejudice, just with added Zombies!
I've read these sequels:
ReplyDelete* Darcy's Story (Janet Aylmer) Over reuses Miss Austen's work and keeps close to her style.
* Letters from Pemberly (Jane Dawkins) Cute same old same old.
* Fitzwilliam Darcy Gentlemen {3 book series} (Pamela Aidan) Imaginative with a truly romantic Darcy.
* Mr. Darcy's Diary (Amanda Grange) Excellent formalization of possible Darcy point of view.
* Mr. Darcy Presents His Bride (Helen Halstead) Good drama with hints of sexual relationship.
* Loving Mr. Darcy (Sharon Lathan) Soft porn married life with way too much "I love you".
* Mr. Darcy Takes a Wife (Linda Berdoll) Borderline porn with amazing, detailed storylineS!
* Darcy and Elizabeth (Linda Berdoll) Borderline porn with more amazing, detailed storylineS!
I just finished gathering a list of all the P&P spin-offs and sequels I could find. 130 on that list, and I suppose there are many more.
