it started off great and my little sister and I were looking forward to it for a long time... I had to quick change the channel at a certain intimate part... Needless to say she was very shocked and embarrassed. Opps.
I actually thought that the series was a little slow-paced at the beginning, and only got more interesting in the following episodes after Matthew arrived at Downton. So I've voted 'it's OK'.
There was alot written about this in the UK recently, comparing it to the new Upstairs, Downstairs and declaring it better. Having seen both, U/D is definitely better. Julian Fellowes, who wrote Downton Abbey (and Gosford Park) came under alot of criticism, as well, for lifting several plot devices from well known authors.
I liked it...the one part with the Duke ( what a cad ) and the servant I could have done without. The costumes are just gorgeous. I think the oldest daughter is a brat, the middle daughter is a real vocal stinger ( I love the way she's calls out people on their true motives ) and the youngest is caring and sweet. I love it that the Lord and Lady are really a loving couple. Maggie Smith as the dowager/mother is just hilarious. She steals every scene she's in...you just can't wait for her to say something...anything !
I absolutely adored this show. My thoughts are going to have to be divided into two posts...my thoughts about the Crawleys were a mini-book, LOL! ;) Looking forward to the continuation of the show on Sunday.
I thought the plot was rather cliched. I saw the Duke for what he was as soon as he arrived. The costumes are to-die-for and I agree about Maggie Smith. I just love her!
I'm wondering if there are other scenes to come that will be shocking to young children, like the scene in the duke's bedroom. Can someone who has seen all the episodes let us know?

ReplyDeleteI understand. It should have been advertised that there was adult content. Too bad, for that was the only scene not fit for a child. Vic

ReplyDeleteI agree with Anna I thought it was a little slow and almost stopped watching but then Matthew showed up and things got more interesting.
ReplyDeleteEnjoyed it immensely. Was immediately drawn in by stunning visuals. A grand new 'Upstairs, Downstairs'. Kudos.
