Another Contest? You Must Have Landed in Jane Austen Heaven

Yes, inquiring reader, we are offering another contest yet again with another prize. This one starts today, May 1, and will end on May 18th. All you need to do to win Laurie Viera Rigler's new paperback of the Confesssions of a Jane Austen Addict is to view the cast list of Cranford from Radio Times, and play Six Degrees of Austen Adaptation Separation. For example, Judi Dench played Lady Catherine de Bourgh in P&P 05, one degree of separation. Please your comment below, and we shall collect them. At midnight on May 18th, we will draw the winner!

Cranford related posts are starting to roll in. I would like to direct you to an excellent biopic of Elisabeth Gaskell on Jane Austen in Vermont. Very well done, ladies! This review is just in from Ellen Gray in the Philadelphia Daily News and it is favorable. Cassandra Austen, Jane's beloved sister, died in 1845. One wonders if she read some of the installments of the Cranford Chronicles.

We hope you have fun with this contest! We are curious to know how close (or far away) these actors are to a Jane Austen connection, and can't wait to see what you come up with.
  • Cranford will air on PBS's Masterpiece Classic Sunday, May 4th at 9 pm EST.
  • Look for Mrs. Elton to make an appearance on this blog soon!

Oooh, fun! I love things like this..and I like to make them as long and random as possible, so bear with me. :)

1. Alex Etel was in The Water Horse with Ben Chaplin who was in The Truth About Cats and Dogs with Jeanine Garaofalo who was in Wet Hot American Summer with Paul Rudd who played Josh, the modern Mr. Knightly in Clueless.

or if that isn't Austeny enough:

2. Lesley Manville was in Topsy Turvy with Jim Broadbent (and, oh it can go so many places Jim Broadbent!)who was in Bridget Jones' Diary with Colin Firth, our very own Mr Darcy (or if you want, you can go with Hugh Grant in Sense and Sensibility).

Seriously, I could do this all day long!

Claudie Blakley played Charlotte Lucas in P&P 2005, so one degree of separation; and she played Mabel Nesbitt in Gosford Park. I loved her as Mabel and started to watch for her since then. She played the part with such pathos. Anyway, Gosford Park starred Maggie Smith, who played Lady Gresham, so two degrees of separation.

This is fun!

Maggie Smith played lady gresham in Becoming Jane. (Why won't they let us edit comments?)

I have six ! I have six ! Well, I wasn't sure how to count so I counted the number of actors involved apart from the one in Cranford :

Francesca Annis played Katiusha in Onegin with Toby Stephens who played the infamous Kim Philby in Cambridge Spies costarring Anna-Louise Plowman who played Caroline Spalding in He Knew he Was Right with David Tennant who played Barty Crouch Jr. in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire costarring Timothy Spall who was Mr Emerson in A Room With a View with Elaine Cassidy who played Maud in Fingersmith costarring Sally Hawkins who was in Persuasion 07.

Gosh, that was fun ! Thanks, great idea !

Well ok I don't think they were mentioned here, though they're pretty basic...
Simon Woods by one degree: he played Mr Bingley in P & P 05'
Simon Woods by 2 degrees: in Cranford he played with Greg Wise and Judi Dench who played Willoughby in S & S 95 and Lady Catherine in P & P 05, respectively.
i love making connections!
Greg Wise by 1 degree: as mentioned before, he played Willoughby in S & S 95

Greg Wise played Willoughby in Sense and Sensibility '95. His wife is Emma Thompson (Elinor in S&S '95), his sister-in-law is Sophie Thompson (Miss Bates in Emma '96 & Mary Musgrove in Persuasion '95), and his mother-in-law is Phyllida Law (Mrs. Bates in Emma'96 and Mrs. Austen in Miss Austen Regrets).

Imelda Staunton played Charlotte Palmer in S&S '95. She also played in Cambridge Spies with Tom Hollander (Mr. Collins in P&P '95), Samuel West (Mr. Elliot in Persuasion '95) and Rupert Penry-Jones (Capt. Wentworth in Persuasion '07)

Simon Woods played Mr. Bingley in Pride and Prejudice '05. Also starred in Cambridge Spies with Staunton, Hollander, West and Penry-Jones.

A few more degrees. I've already said that Greg Wise is brother-in-law to Sophie Thompson (see above). She played in A Room with a View '07 with Timothy West. He is the husband of Prunella Scales (Miss Bates in KB's Emma) and the father of Samuel West (Mr. Elliot in Persuasion '95). He also starred in Bleak House with Anna Maxwell-Martin (Cassandra in Becoming Jane) and Carey Mulligan (Kitty in P&P '05 and Isabel Thorpe in Northanger Abbey '07). Carey Mulligan also starred in My Boy Jack with Daniel Radcliffe who starred in the Harry Potter movies with Emma Thompson (Elinor S&S '95) , Mark Williams (Sir Middleton in S&S '08), Alan Rickman (Col. Brandon in S&S '95) and Imelda Staunton (Charlotte Palmer in S$S '95).
