The bench the couple are sitting on in that last picture is very interesting, Vic.
Benches were specially designed for this courting purpose. They were S shaped. Each loop of the S had a seat in it. The two people would be facing away from each other but their heads would be very close so they could converse intimately.The man in the picture is sitting in the position where the other loop of the S should be.
