Keira and Carey on the Red Carpet: Lizzie and Kitty Bennet Looking Hot

Carey Mulligan and Keira Knightley at the London Film Festival. Image @Tom and Lorenzo
Tom and Lorenzo, who are fabulous and opinionated, recently featured two of the Bennet sisters from Pride and Prejudice 2005 in one of their fashion posts. What do you think of the ladies' outfits? Yay for their youthful and playful quality? Or nay for misfiring their fashion choices?

Jane Austen Mashup Throwdown

Have Jane Austen mashups turned the corner? Has the trend been drained of blood, now that Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, the movie, has been shelfed? Do you care if the trend lives on or not? Now is your time to give us your opinion!

They're among the walking dead, and barely moving
Eh. Meh. Bleh. Feh! I could care less.
Regency vampires are kinda cute. I'll read a few of them.
I keep baring my neck hoping that one will bite me. Keep bringing them on

Keira Knightley? A Double Take

When I saw this image taken at the Toronto International Film Festival, I did a double take and wondered if Keira Knightley had "work" done on her face. Then I read the caption: Rachel Weisz, who has slimmed down considerably. Am I the only one to notice the resemblance? The two women could play sisters.

Keira Knightley? No, it's Rachel Weitz

Celebrity Look-Alikes Include Jane Austen Character Actresses

This post, Celebrity Look-Alikes, includes Frances O'Connor, who played Fanny Price, and Keira Knightley, who played Elizabeth Bennet. Some of the other comparisons are a bit closer. Nevertheless, the resemblances are uncanny.

Keira and Carey: Pride and Prejudice Alumni Reunite for Another Film

Keira Knightley and Carey Mulligan (r) are in Never Let Me Go, a film about three friends who grow up together and attend the same boarding school. In an interview with Mail Online, Carey, who was sixteen when she played the role of Kitty Bennet, "credits Knightley for being her 'acting coach' while they were on the set of Pride And Prejudice."

The film, which also features Sally Hawkins(Anne Elliot, Persuasion), is scheduled to be released in the U.S. in October. Interestingly, this drama has a sci-fic ending. (I have not read the book by Kazuo Ishiguro.) Watch a short video about filming the movie...

Jane Austen Movie Fashion Throwdown

Today I ask you to decide between Lizzie Bennet and Elizabeth Bennet, or Keira and Jennifer. Which actress's wardrobe best AUTHENTICALLY portrayed our favorite Austen heroine? The votes for Mrs. Bennet were hot and heavy and it wasn't until the 5th day that the tide began to sway towards Brenda Blethyn's side. This week I ask you: Whose wardrobe do you like best?

Jennifer Ehle or Keira Knightley dressed as Elizabeth Bennet?

Sexy Samantha and Mr. Darcy Set for Private Lives

Kim Cattrall, who was born in Widnes, England, will appear opposite Matthew MacFadyen next year in Private Lives, a Noel Coward play. The plot revolves around two divorced people who meet again while honeymooning with their new spouses. The play is scheduled to run from March 3, 2010 in the Vaudeville Theatre in London's West End.

Kim is best known for her role as Samantha Jones in Sex in the City. Matthew MacFadyen, as every Janeite knows, played Mr. Darcy opposite Keira Knightley in 2005's Pride and Prejudice.

Speaking of Keira, rumor has it that she is considering playing the role of Eliza Doolittle in My Fair Lady. Groans can be heard around the earth, but Keira has managed to draw large audiences to her films. Here's an image of Keira and Audrey Hepburn morphed.

Jane Austen Movie Throwdown

Poll of the week: Who is your favorite cinematic Elizabeth Bennet? I am including three choices this week, because each actress has given widely different interpretations of the role. She is also a product of her time, so that in 1939 Hollywood thought it was perfectly acceptable for a 30-something actress like Greer Garson to play Elizabeth in Civil War era garb. For these reasons, I am not including her in the mix. Plus, I can never forgive the producers for changing the ending and turning Lady Catherine de Bourgh into a nice person.

Favorite Elizabeth Bennet

Elizabeth Garvey, 1980 Pride and Prejudice

Ms. Garvey was for a long time my favorite Lizzy. A pretty and talented actress, her interpretation of a lady like Lizzy was wonderfully natural compared to the other 1980's BBC adaptations of Jane Austen's novels. When I think of her portrayal of Pride and Prejudice's famous heroine, I fondly recall her sparring conversations with Lady Catherine de Bourgh. There was fire in this Lizzy's eyes. Elizabeth, who is aging remarkably well, will be present at JASNA's annual meeting in Philadelphia. Lucky us.

Jennifer Ehle, 1995 Pride and Prejudice

A pretty and healthy looking Lizzy with the striking eyes so admired by her dashing Mr. Darcy, Jennifer was present in almost every scene of this 6-hour adaptation. One of Jennifer's more memorable scenes is when she is standing at the piano with Georgianna Darcy, who is playing. She and Colin Firth share a look that so perfectly captures their changing feelings for each other, that I very often use an image from that scene to represent her character.

Keira Knightley, 2005 Pride and Prejudice

A major film star today, Keira was just beginning to make her mark as an actress when she took on the role of Lizzy. Her interpretation of Lizzy is as a feisty and tomboyish young woman who prefers to dress in plain clothes. The rain scene, in which Matthew Macfadyen as Mr. Darcy proposes was made memorable by the crackling chemistry between the two actors. Even as her Lizzy is repelled by the way Mr. Darcy chose to propose to her, she is sexually atracted to him.

Team Bennet 2005: Where Are They Now?

This is one of my favorite happy moments in the 2005 movie adaptation, Pride and Prejudice, where all six of the team Bennet ladies walk together arm in arm. So where are all of these talented actresses now? From left to right.

Mrs. Bennet (Brenda Blethyn) stars as a Sister Ignatious, a Benedictine nun in the movie The Calling, the story of a young university graduate Joanna (Emily Beechen) engaged in a modern lifestyle who shocks her friends and family by announcing she has a calling to join a closed order of Benedictine Nuns and give up the life they had all assumed she was planning. The cast also includes other Austen related actors, Susannah Harker (Jane Bennet in Pride and Prejudice 1995) and Corin Redgrave (Persuasion 1995).

Jane Bennet (Rosamund Pike) stars with a slew of other Austen actors in An Education, (screenplay written by Nick Hornby), a coming-of-age story about a teenage girl in 1960s suburban London, and how her life changes with the arrival of a playboy nearly twice her age. The cast includes Emma Thompson (Elinor Dashwood in Sense and Sensibility 1995), Dominic Cooper (John Willoughby in Sense and Sensibility 2008), Olivia Williams (Jane Austen in Miss Austen Regrets 2008, and Jane Fairfax in Emma 1996), Sally Hawkins (Anne Elliot in Persuasion 2007), and Carey Mulligan (Isabella Thorpe in Northanger Abbey 2007). Miss Pike is also engaged to her director from Pride and Prejudice, Joe Wright.

Kitty Bennet (Carey Mulligan) in addition to co-starring in An Education mentioned above, she has three major motion pictures in the queue, The Greatest, Brothers and Public Enemies.

Mary Bennet (Talulah Riley) has recently stared in Dr. Who and portrays Marianne in the movie The Boat that Rocked which is a period comedy about an illegal radio station in the North Sea in the 1960's. The cast also includes Emma Thompson (Elinor Dashwood in Sense and Sensibility 1995) and Gemma Arterton (Elizabeth Bennet in Lost in Austen).

Elizabeth Bennet (Keira Knightley) is currently staring as Georgiana Cavendish in the movie The Duchess and will be staring with Gwyneth Paltrow (Emma Woodhouse in Emma 1996) in Shakespeare’s King Lear.

Lydia Bennet (Jena Malone) portrays Kelly in The Messenger, the story of an American soldier (Ben Foster) who struggles with an ethical dilemma when he becomes involved with a widow of a fallen officer played by Samantha Morton (Harriet Smith in Emma 1996).

Keira Knightley is The Duchess: Have You Seen It Yet?

Top on my list of must see movies this fall is The Duchess staring Keira Knightley (Pride and Prejudice 2005) as Georgiana Cavendish, the Duchess of Devonshire (1757-1806). The movie is based on Amanda Foreman’s best selling and highly acclaimed biography of the scandalous life of the 18th-century English aristocrat, socialite, political activist, and fashion icon for her generation. The screenplay is by Jeffery Hatcher (Casanova 2005), Anders Thomas Jensen and Saul Dibb, and directed by Saul Dibb.

From the movie trailer, the costumes look sumptuous and the on-location shoots at Chatsworth, Bath, Somerset House and others look very impressive.

The cast is quite impressive and includes many actors with Jane Austen connections.

Keira Knightley as Georgiana Cavendish, Duchess of Devonshire (Elizabeth Bennet in Pride and Prejudice 2005)

Ralph Fiennes as William Cavendish, 5th Duke of Devonshire (Lord Voldemort in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix 2007)

Hayley Atwell as Bess Foster (Mary Crawford in Mansfield Park 2007)

Charlotte Rampling as Lady Spencer

Dominic Cooper as Charles Grey, 2nd Earl Grey (John Willoughby in Sense and Sensibility (2007)

Aidan McArdle as Richard Brinsley Sheridan

Simon McBurney as Charles James Fox

Alistair Petrie as Heaton (Robert Martin in Emma 1996)

Michael O’Conner - Costume Designer

Rachel Portman – Original Music (Emma 1996)

So, gentle readers – have you seen it? I am anxious for opinions on the performances, locations, costumes and story, so do tell!

Elizabeth Bennet (Keira Knightley) tours the Derbyshire Peaks again!

What are men to rocks and mountains?” is what Jane Austen’s character Louisa Hurst wants to know in the novel and movie of Pride and Prejudice. Good question! Austen actress Keira Knightley who played Elizabeth Bennet in the 2005 movie might just know the answer after her filming in Derbyshire for the movie, and again for the new production Duchess which will be released on September 5th. Read this interesting article on the filming at Chatsworth, the palatial manor house where Georgiana, the Duchess of Devonshire resided and the movie was partially filmed. Here is an excerpt.

The Duchess, a sumptuous-looking costume drama about Lady Georgiana Spencer, wife of the 5th Duke of Devonshire. Married at 17, this beautiful 18th-century socialite, fashion icon and compulsive gambler was painted by Gainsborough and Reynolds, but has only now been granted the ultimate cultural accolade: being played by Keira Knightley.

Austen Actress Carey Mulligan: A Passion to Perform

English actress Carey Mulligan wanted the part of Kitty Bennet in the 2005 production of Pride and Prejudice so passionately, that she contacted the director and pleaded her case. This was a bold move for a young stage actress who up until that point had not worked in film. Happily, her persuasive abilities and talent secured her the role as the fourth Bennet sister in the big-budget film adaptation of Jane Austen classic novel co-staring Keira Knightley as her sister Elizabeth, and Matthew McFadyen as Mr. Darcy.

Born Carey Hannah Mulligan in 1985 in London, Carey spent her early childhood in Germany until age 14. She credits her love of acting to her early experiences at Woldingham School, an indepentant Roman Catholic boarding and day school for girls in Surrey, whose previous famous students include actresses Vivien Leigh, Maureen O’Sullivan and Rachel Weisz. After graduation, her family doubted that she could succeed as a professional actress and planned a University education. Undeterred, she connected with actor Julian Fellowes who mentored her into an audition with Pride and Prejudice director Joe Wright.
As an aspiring young actress, being cast in Pride and Prejudice has “thrown her in the path” of other great acting opportunities. After filming wrapping up, she was cast as Hermia in Forty Winks at the Royal Court Theatre. Ms. Mulligan then won the plum role as Ada Clare, the impassioned ward of John Jarndyce in the BBC/Masterpiece Theater adaptation of Charles Dickens’s classic, Bleak House. This performance earned her a nomination for "Best Supporting Actress in a motion picture of miniseries" for the OFTA television awards in 2005.
In 2006 she appeared in The Amazing Mrs. Pritchard, another drama for the BBC/Masterpiece Theater, as Emily the unruly young daughter of the newly elected Prime Minister of the UK. Ms. Mulligan showed great depth of character in her portrayal of a young woman thrown into the national spotlight with her family as her mother runs the nation. Other roles that year included Violet Willet in Mystery: Miss Marple, The Sittaford Mystery with Geraldine McEwan as Agatha Christie’s sleuth Miss Marple.

For a second time Ms. Mulligan had the chance to portray a Jane Austen character as Isabella Thorpe in the ITV/Masterpiece production of Northanger Abbey co-staring Felicity Jones as Catherine Morland and JJ Feild as Henry Tilney. Well suited for Regency finery and language, Ms. Mulligan excelled as the saucy and slippery Isabella, allowing us to enjoy her diversity and ingenuity as an actress.

In certain scenes in Northanger Abbey, I was struck by Ms. Mulligan’s remarkable resemblance to the famous British actress, Dame Wendy Hiller at the same age. But it is more than just her face that evokes the memory. Her carriage and diction harken back to an elegant and inspiring era of British stage and film actors, a style that we see less frequently as of late.

Dame Hiller excelled as the confident but confused heroine in my favorite film, I Know Where I am Going (1945). If some clever producer has the guts to remake this cinematic classic, please cast Ms. Mulligan as plunky Joan Webster. I have every confidence that she will not disappoint.
This weekend we have an opportunity to see Ms. Mulligan in another challenging role as Elsie Kipling in Masterpiece Classic’s presentation of My Boy Jack on Sunday, April 20 th at 9:00 pm on PBS. Set in pre-World War I England, Carrie stars as the fiesty sister of John (Jack) Kipling (Daniel Radcliffe) whose ferverently patriotic father, poet, author and national celebrity Rudyard Kipling (David Haig) is determined to send his son to war, even though he can not pass his army physical because of poor vision. Elsie and her mother Carrie Kipling (Kim Cattrall) are sanguine on the scheme, and some of the best scenes in the film show their passionate opposition to the men in their lives dogged determination to prevail, but true to the times, they are women and must watch and wait, and then grieve over the folly and loss. The script by David Haig who also stars as Kipling senior is excellent, so don’t miss the chance to see a polished cast, and a performance by Carrie Mulligan, a bright star with a passion to perform.

6 Degrees of Austen Actress Carey Mulligan Separation Triva quiz!

Ms. Mulligan had first degree Austen connections to all of these actors listed below. Can you name them, or the production that they were in?
  • Actress Maureen O'Sullivan starred as which Jane Austen character?
  • Vivien Leigh married which Mr. Darcy in real life?
  • Julian Fellowes starred as the Prince Regent in which two productions?
  • Anna Maxwell Martin starred with Carrie in Bleakhouse. Which Jane Austen relative did she portray in the movie Becoming Jane?
  • Sylvestra Le Touzel starred with Carrie in The Amazing Mrs. Pritchard. What two Jane Austen characters has she portrayed?
  • Laurence Fox starred with Carrie in Mystery: Miss Marple, The Sittaford Mystery, but he was also one of Jane Austen's love interests in which film?
If you know the answers, leave a comment, and add more connections!
