Jane Austen Movie Throwdown: Which Actress Walked Best in the Rain?

Ah, Sense and Sensibility. There are many scenes in the last two film adaptations that simply are not in Jane's novel. Nevertheless, they make for great cinematic melodrama. Take the reason for Marianne's illness, for example. Jane describes the onset of her illness at Cleveland as being a tad less dramatic than the rain walks depicted in the films:
Kate Winslet quotes Shakespeare in the rain as she gazes longingly at Willoughby's house
Two delightful twilight walks on the third and fourth evenings of her being there, not merely on the dry gravel of the shrubbery, but all over the grounds, and especially in the most distant parts of them, where there was something more of wildness than in the rest, where the trees were the oldest, and the grass was the longest and wettest, had—assisted by the still greater imprudence of sitting in her wet shoes and stockings—given Marianne a cold so violent as, though for a day or two trifled with or denied, would force itself by increasing ailments on the concern of every body, and the notice of herself. Prescriptions poured in from all quarters, and as usual, were all declined. Though heavy and feverish, with a pain in her limbs, and a cough, and a sore throat, a good night's rest was to cure her entirely; and it was with difficulty that Elinor prevailed on her, when she went to bed, to try one or two of the simplest of the remedies.
The wind WHIPS Kate/Marianne's cape and gown
Marianne got up the next morning at her usual time; to every inquiry replied that she was better, and tried to prove herself so, by engaging in her accustomary employments. But a day spent in sitting shivering over the fire with a book in her hand, which she was unable to read, or in lying, weary and languid, on a sofa, did not speak much in favour of her amendment; and when, at last, she went early to bed, more and more indisposed...
In 2009, Charity Wakefield WALKED the walk

Such a scene would not have been dramatic enough for a film, and thus we have Marianne wandering in the rain searching for Combe Magna, Willoughby's house.

Jane Austen Movie Throwdown

This week we ask you to vote for your favorite actress who portrayed Jane Austen's sister, Cassandra

Becoming Jane: Anna Maxwell Martin

Anna played a young Cassandra who lost her fiance. She also played Bessy Higgins in North and South and a memorable Esther Summerson in Bleak House.

Miss Austen Regrets: Greta Scacchi

Greta played an older, more mature Cassandra. Careworn and aging, she takes care of Jane in her final illness. Miss Scacchi has also portrayed Cara in Brideshead Revisited and Mrs. Weston in Emma. One of Greta's more interesting costume roles was in the The Red Violin, in which she played Victoria Byrd.

Jane Austen Movie Throwdown

This week's poll concerns reading scenes or scenes involving a book in Jane Austen movie sequel adaptations. Which are your favorite scenes involving a book/reading?

Jemima Rooper as Amanda Price loves to read Pride and Prejudice. Before long, Lizzie Bennet steps inside her bathroom and she finds herself living inside the book. When Mr. Darcy (Elliot Cowan) reads Pride and Prejudice, he mistakenly thinks that Amanda revealed private information. Angered, he tears the book up and tosses it in a fountain.

In The Jane Austen Book Club, Prudie Drummond (Emily Blunt) convinces her husband Dean (Marc Blucas) to read Persuasion. He not only loves the book, but the story brings the couple closer and helps to mend their troubled marriage.

Cher (Alicia Silverstone) is an expert shopper in Clueless, loosely based on Emma, and one would never confuse her for a book worm. Her Mr. Knightley, Josh (played by Paul Rudd) is a serious law student in college. The snappy dialog makes watching the film a treat. CHER: Hey, granola breath, you got something on your chin. JOSH: I'm growing a goatee. CHER: Oh, that's good. You don't want to be the last one at the coffee house without chin pubes.

Jane Austen Movie Throwdown

Next time I visit England, I am definitely visiting some of the Jane Austen movie locations. Of the locations you have seen, which will take you off the beaten path?

Which Jane Austen Movie Location/s Would You Like to See?

Lacock has been the setting for Meryton in Pride and Prejudice 1995, Emma with Kate Beckinsale in 1996, and the recent Cranford series.

Remember the rain scene at the Temple of Apollo in Pride and Prejudice 2005? While the setting is inaccurate in terms of Jane Austen's description, the backdrop was wildly romantic for Mr. Darcy's (Matthew Macfadyen's) first proposal to Lizzie (Keira Knightley).

The setting for all Box Hill scenes in Emma is, well, Box Hill. Emma's ridicule of Miss Bates, Mr. Knightley's justifiable anger and disappointment with Emma, Frank Churchill's dubious nature, and Jane Fairfax's pain upon seeing Frank flirt with another woman. The views from this hill are said to be spectacular, and it remains today much as it was during Jane Austen's time.

Stanage Edge, Hathersage Moor, Hathersage, Derbyshire, England, UK

Who can forget Elizabeth Bennet standing at the edge of Stanage Edge in the Peak District as she and the Gardiners traveled north? One might quibble with the end result of this film, but some of the visuals are stunning. This scene alone gave me a desire to see this part of England.

City of Bath

Jane Austen lived in Bath, which is also featured in Persuasion and Northanger Abbey. The Georgian center of town is a jewel and transports one back to the Georgian Era. The Jane Austen Centre is located in Bath, as are the Pump Room, Assembly Rooms, Molland's, and a host of other sites we associate with Jane Austen.

Multiple answers are allowed this week!

Persuasion (2007) will have an encore presentation on PBS's Masterpiece Classic tonight. One scene was quite controversial: Anne Elliot's (Sally Hawkin's) run through Bath towards the end. In this week's throwdown, I ask you: How seemly or unseemly was Anne's conduct?

A very long and protracted kiss in the street! Oh, how shameless.

Emma 2009 airs tonight on PBS at 9 PM EST! Oh, what joy for Jane Austen fans. Laurel Ann from Austenprose, Kali from Emma Adaptations, and I (Jane Austen's World) will be hosting a twitter party in conjuction with PBS. Click on this link for details. In tonight's broadcast, three mansions in Highbury will be showcased. Which one catches your fancy?

"Emma Woodhouse’s home, Hartfield, was filmed at Squerryes Court, just off the M25 in Kent, and Mr Knightley’s Donwell Abbey at Loseley Park, near Guildford. Both houses were intended by Austen to represent the solidity of the old landed gentry as opposed to flashy new Regency fashions." - Times Online

Hartfield, Mr. Woodhouse and daughter Emma Woodhouse (Squerryes Court, Kent)

Donwell Abbey, Mr. Knightley (Loseley Park, near Guilford)

Randalls, The Westons (Can anyone help to identify this wonderful house? Is that an oast house attached to the outbuildings?)

Jane Austen Movie Throwdown

When she saw a portrait of Mrs. Harriet Quinton (who was mistress to the Prince Regent), Jane Austen wrote in a letter dated May, 1813 of how much Mrs. Q resembled her vision of Jane Bennet: "Mrs Bingley is exactly herself, size, shaped face, features & sweetness; there never was a greater likeness. She is dressed in a white gown, with green ornaments, which convinces me of what I had always supposed, that green was a favourite colour with her." Two actresses who portrayed Jane Bennet come close to resembling this portrait: Sabina Franklyn (1980 Jane) and Maureen O'Sullivan (1940 Jane). Susannah Harker of P&P 1995 and Rosamund Pike of P&P 2005 are both tall, slender, and blond, and thus they were eliminated. In your opinion, which actress came the closest to matching Jane Austen's vision of Jane Bennet?
